First impressions:
The colouring is dull and grey. The disabled don't look happy, and are watching kids programmes.
The new character is going to liven the place up, and maybe change how the disabled are treated. The colouring may change as well as the programme.
everyone is sat still in the wheel chairs, the place is dull. the boy looks sad and everyone is wearing boring clothes. this could show that they do not treat the disabled well.
his eyes are focusing on the building, so he is wandering what it will be like. it doesn't look happy. he seems a bit of a rebel by his hair and nose piercing, perhaps wants to stand out.
he is represented to be the light and energy of the place. everyone else is set back, and in the dark. he has a facial expression unlike the others.
Rory's playlist:
green day
rock music
the sound is non diagetic and quite still to portray the mood. all positioned quite far apart. dull colours. dull clothes. sad facial expressions.
camera work is used. close ups are used on Rory to show he is a lively new character. the shots are quite distanced on the other characters to show they are isolated and lonely.
Discuss the ways in which disability is represented in this clip:
Disability is represented in this clip in many ways by sound, colour, positioning and dialogue. Mise en scene is used effectively to present the effects and difficulties associated with having a disability. The use of dull colours and monotonous diagetic sound builds up a depressing tone and a sense of the inner conflict that the patients are feeling. Camera work is used very effectively in this extract. The use of long shots makes it easy to see what is going on all around the room. It lets us see all of them in a formation as if they have a routine everyday because they can't do things for themselves. Close ups are also used so we can see the emotions of the people and their facial expressions.
The use of sound with in the extract helps to get across their emotional background. This helps to create an overall image of the people that you see. The way that this is able to work is by how they are able to use non-diagetic music the choice of song fits in well with the over impression that we are given of the characters like rory. Each choice of music helps to represent the disability. Editing is also used effectively by flicking from one thing to another to keep the audience's attention instead of sticking to one part of the scene for a long time. It is also a good way to represent disability's positioning in the house.
